DISTEMPER OUTBREAK/ HONDESIEKTE UITBRAAK
There is a severe outbreak of Distemper in Atlantis and surrounds.
Distemper is caused by a virus and is very easily spread between dogs. The majority of infected dogs die from the disease. Distemper cannot be treated and is therefore one of the diseases that we vaccinate against.
First symptoms are usually sneezing and coughing with a thick discharge from eyes and nose. Infected dogs may also have vomiting and diarrhoea. The virus can then affect the nervous system and brain causing seizures, muscle shaking, blindness and paralysis.
The virus is spread by coughing, sneezing and sharing of food and water bowls.
To minimize the risk to your dogs please keep your dogs indoors and do not allow them to mix with other dogs. Make sure that they get their vaccinations every year. If your dog is showing any of the symptoms listed above or has been in contact with a dog showing these symptoms please contact your vet urgently for more advice. If your dog has not had his or her vaccinations this year please make an appointment at your vet as soon as possible.
The Village Vet will keep you updated via Facebook. Once again – please keep your animals indoors and avoid mixing with other dogs that may be carrying the virus.
